Daniel Pruitt has a good life. He has a respectable career, good health, loyal friends, and every reason to be satisfied.
Yet he is haunted by a persistent feeling that something is missing.
When a charismatic speaker convinces him that this dissatisfaction is evidence of an unrealized purpose, Daniel begins a decade-long quest to become the person he believes he is meant to be. He pursues achievement, productivity, self-optimization, therapy, wellness, relationships, mindfulness, and spirituality with relentless sincerity. Each new path promises freedom. Each delivers only temporary relief.
As Daniel moves from one system of self-improvement to the next, he gradually discovers that the very effort to complete himself may be the thing preventing him from ever feeling complete.
Written in the tradition of philosophical fables such as Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Illusions, and The Alchemist, The Improver is a thoughtful, often humorous exploration of ambition, identity, and the modern obsession with becoming a better version of ourselves.
At once compassionate and unsettling, this is a story for anyone who has ever felt that life would finally begin once they became someone else.
