Beauty can come from ashes--this is a story of triumph after the devastating loss of my self. Twenty years ago I sustained a severe Traumatic Brain Injury and nearly died, causing me to feel like a stranger in my own life. Since acquiring my crippling disability, I have been able to become fully independent, obtained a Bachelor's degree, become a mentor to other brain injury survivors, attended graduate school, and now I'm married to a solid husband and have a sweet daughter and a house and a full-time job, among other things. I've fully become myself as I currently am after decades of trying to be the old Nicole, and I presently have the most perfect life.

My goal for this book is for survivors and caregivers to be provided with some sense of solidarity. All brain injuries are unique, but I hope I can help some people feel more comfortable in their new normal.
