Imitations of Some of the Epigrams of Martial, Part 1-2 is a book written by Nathaniel Brassey Halhed in 1793. The book contains a collection of imitations of epigrams written by the Roman poet Marcus Valerius Martialis, commonly known as Martial. Halhed, an English orientalist and linguist, was known for his translations of Eastern texts and his work on Indian languages. In this book, he showcases his skills as a poet and translator by offering his own take on Martial's witty and often bawdy epigrams. The book is divided into two parts, with the first part containing imitations of epigrams from Martial's first book and the second part containing imitations of epigrams from his second book. Halhed's imitations are faithful to the original in terms of structure and tone, but he also adds his own flair and wit to the poems. Overall, Imitations of Some of the Epigrams of Martial, Part 1-2 is a fascinating example of the intersection of classical Roman poetry and English literature in the late 18th century. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
