Tommy is four years old. He loves running fast, laughing loud and building tall towers with his blocks.
At the park and at preschool, he often plays with Nico - a very funny friend... who also pushes, shouts and uses bad words just for fun.
Tommy doesn't really like those games.
But he's afraid that if he doesn't copy Nico, he'll be left out.
So he says the bad word. He gives a little shove.
And that's when Mum sees him.
She shouts. Tommy feels a sting in his tummy and a hot tear in his eyes.
Inside, a scary thought appears:
Maybe Mum thinks I'm a bad kid.
That evening, something different happens.
Instead of staying only in anger, Mum and Tommy talk.
Mum explains her fear and her tiredness:
I get angry because I'm scared you might get hurt or hurt someone else.
And sometimes my voice comes out too loud.
Tommy explains his side:
I feel strange when I do what Nico does.
Big and brave... but also a bit bad inside.
And I'm scared Nico won't play with me if I don't join in.
Together, they create three simple family rules
Hands are for helping, not for pushing
The mouth is for kind words - hurtful words get blown away with a pffff...
If a game turns bad, you can say STOP, I don't like this game and walk away
The next day at the park, Tommy gets to test his new rules for real.
Nico shouts bad words. Tommy imagines them floating away like balloons.
Nico pushes other kids. Tommy keeps his hands by his sides and says, STOP, I don't like this game,
and goes to play somewhere else.
Mum sees it all and gives him a huge hug:
I saw what you did. You didn't push anyone. You said STOP to a bad game. I am so proud of you.
Later, even Nico starts to wonder if maybe STOP is better than shoving.
