The Illustrated Rye Town Guide helps prospective visitors and holidaymakers - but also people far away but with a love of history, to understand how the Cinque Port of Rye, a beautiful hill town with a harbour in East Sussex, England, and its wonderful landscape, have developed over thousands of years. The Guide takes the reader from the Ice Ages, through the turbulent Saxon, Viking, Norman Conquest, Medieval, Tudor and Elizabethan times, then on to the present day. The exciting historic narrative includes land and sea battles, coastal raids, witchcraft, religious dissent, murder, flooding disasters, plague, literary and scientific achievements - and the great struggles to reclaim marshland and to preserve the harbour against almost endless silting and longshore drift. This narrative proves that no matter what is thrown at them, the people of Rye will triumph over adversity.
The Guide also gives suggestions for local walks and maps showing the town centre, its immediate environment and the wider area which includes Camber Sands and Winchelsea. There are photographs of the most important buildings and a comprehensive section at the end of the Guide giving a detailed history of the remarkable buildings and sights of the town. Whether you intend to visit Rye, or live far away, this is a Guide that everyone can enjoy and learn from.
