When James was a caseworker fresh out of college, he thought he could make a difference to kids caught in the foster care system. Twelve years later, James has constructed a life where he'll never again be the person who lets someone down. Now a sociology professor, he teaches and studies social problems from the safe distance of academia. He married Courtney, a high-achieving finance executive who's as steady as a rock. Then, during a marriage counseling session, Courtney announces he's taking an extended trip to his sister's in San Francisco and needs a pause on their marriage.
James's world crumbles.
While Courtney reaches out with texts, like there's still life in their marriage, a late-registering transfer student named Grant shows up in one of James's classes. Attractive, intelligent, and already familiar with James's research on queer identity, Grant is impossible to ignore. He also shares that he grew up in foster care, has been on his own for years, and is now trying to find his place at the big university.
James is fascinated by Grant, but he has the wits to keep their interactions academically focused, for the most part. Memories of his failed attempts to help Isaiah still haunt him, even as they draw him closer to Grant.
Meanwhile, Courtney is asking for a reconciliation, forcing James to decide whether he can trust him again. It's overwhelming. And more and more, Grant's behavior feels like a seduction.
But a seduction into what? A forbidden relationship? Another failure? Or something much more chilling?
