These twenty nine letters home were written over fifty years ago, when the author embarked on a year's contract with the International Grenfell Association, caring for the people of northern Newfoundland and the Labrador coast.
The beauty of empty, cold landscape captivated the author for the challenges it made, but also for the fun it provided. The empathy, friendliness and courage of the Newfoundlanders and the First People (Eskimos) is captured as they shed, hunted and danced in their tight-knit communities.
Elaine Steane (née Fullard), is the daughter of geographers so has an enduring love of maps and the natural world. As a nurse, she later specialised in the prevention of heart disease and stroke, introducing the NHS Health Check for which she was awarded an MBE.
This is Elaine's third memoir. Previous publications include Soapsud Island and Nurse, The Bedpans are out of Alignment, and three Oxfordshire walking guides, The Seven Shires Way (revised version) being the latest one.
