What would your child do if they suddenly looked around... and you weren't there?
It can happen in seconds.
A crowded supermarket. A busy shopping mall. A playground. A beach. A train station. An airport. One moment your child is beside you-and the next, you're out of sight.
For a child, that moment can feel enormous.
IF I GET LOST was created to help families prepare for it before it ever happens.
This practical, reassuring safety book introduces children to 12 realistic situations in which they could become separated from their parent or caregiver, then helps them practice simple, memorable actions they can use to stay safer and find appropriate help.
Instead of frightening children with worst-case scenarios, the book turns safety preparation into something parents and children can read, discuss, role-play, and practice together.
Throughout the book, children learn four simple steps:
STOP. STAY. FIND HELP. SPEAK UP.
They'll practice what to do if they become separated at a supermarket, shopping mall, park, beach, zoo or museum, theme park, crowded event, train station, airport, public transportation, somewhere unfamiliar, or even in their own neighborhood.
Each lesson begins with a relatable situation a child can easily understand and then explores questions such as:
Who can I ask for help?
What should I say?
Should I keep looking for my grown-up?
What if I know the way home?
What if I'm near traffic, water, trains, or a large crowd?
What information about my family should I know?
And what should I do if someone tries to make me go somewhere I don't want to go?
Children also learn an important distinction: being safe does not mean being afraid of everyone they don't know.
A store employee, security officer, police officer, lifeguard, transportation employee, or other appropriate adult may be exactly the person a lost child needs.
The goal is to help children recognize appropriate helpers while also understanding that asking someone for help does not mean they must follow just anyone somewhere private.
And when being calm is no longer enough, there is THE BIG YELL.
At the end of every lesson, children practice using a loud, confident voice to attract attention if someone tries to grab, pull, force, or take them away.
Because sometimes the safest voice is the one everyone can hear.
Inside you'll find:
- 12 real-life lost-child safety lessons
- Simple actions children can remember
- Parent-and-child discussion prompts
- Realistic What Would You Do? challenges
- Practice identifying appropriate helpers
- Family meeting-place and contact-information exercises
- Location-specific safety lessons for crowds, water, transportation, and unfamiliar places
- THE BIG YELL practice in every chapter
- Colorful illustrations that make each situation easier for children to imagine and discuss
IF I GET LOST isn't designed to make children worried about going out into the world.
It's designed to give them something much more useful:
a plan.
Read it together. Ask the questions. Practice the answers. Make some noise.
And give your child simple safety skills they can carry with them wherever you go.
Because the best time to teach a child what to do if they get lost is before they ever need to know.
