That's what I keep telling myself. I entered that battlefield a thirty-one-year-old Marine sergeant with a bad shoulder and a worse attitude, and I came out ... well ... I came out. Walking, breathing, the whole deal.
Just not in the body I went in with. I'm in hers now. The alien soldier who killed me. And guess who's in the driver's seat?

But you want to know the weird part? It's not the four fingers. It's not the gray skin or the gold eyes or the fact that I can suddenly smell colors. You adjust to that stuff faster than you'd think.
The weird part is the company.
See, when you take by a body like this, you take everybody who came with it. And she was thorough, man. There's a Marine gunny in here who calls targets like she's still got a rifle. A kid - nineteen, first deployment, never even got dirty - who asks me every couple of hours if I'll find her mom someday. There's a dead alien poet from a dead world who talks like a fortune cookie that went to grad school. And underneath all of them, there's her. The former owner. Furious. Patient. Counting the seconds until I slip up and she can take her body back.
But for now I'm wearing the enemy's face at the enemy's dinner table, learning to walk like something I used to shoot, with a chorus of the dead doing peanut gallery commentary on anything I do in my strange afterlife, and everybody around me thinks I'm one of them. Half of them would die for me. The other half would dissect me if they knew what I truly was.
And the only thing keeping me alive is the one person in here who hates me most.
Honestly? I like those odds.
