A deeply moving collection of poems by Amy Levy, united by themes of inner conflict, emotional struggle, and reflective thought. Intimate and searching, these poems offer a poignant insight into Levy's inner life and her remarkable poetic voice.
Written with clarity and restraint, I Thought My Spirit & My Heart Were Tamed explores love, loneliness, doubt, and the longing for rest and understanding. Pieces such as The Promise of Sleep, The Two Terrors, and The End of the Day reveal Levy's ability to convey profound emotional depth with quiet intensity, while others reflect her engagement with art, landscape, and memory.
Levy was a pioneering literary figure, the first Jewish woman to study at Cambridge University, and a gifted poet whose life was tragically brief. This collection stands as a testament to her talent and emotional honesty.
Published as part of the Ragged Hand poetry imprint, this new edition includes an introductory biography of the author by Richard Garnett and is an essential volume for readers of Victorian poetry and feminist literary history.
