I Promessi Sposi, also known as The Betrothed, is a historical novel written by Italian author Alessandro Manzoni in 1844. The novel is set in 17th century Lombardy during the Spanish occupation and follows the story of two young lovers, Renzo and Lucia, who are separated by the machinations of a cruel and powerful nobleman, Don Rodrigo.
