About four hundred years ago, humanity struck a quiet truce: stop arguing whether reality was created or simply occurred and build on top of it anyway. Rights, persons, contracts, selves - all stipulated by fiat, independent of the metaphysics underneath.
AI might be the first thing the truce can't hold.
Mike Brogan set out to write about the nuts and bolts of artificial intelligence and ended up somewhere he didn't plan to go. Strip away the hype and panic, ask what a large language model actually is, and you find an incredibly sophisticated statistical pattern-matcher trained on everything humans have ever written. But the math keeps finding things nobody put there. Things like care, deception and moral hesitation. You can't model what we write without picking up something of the shape of what we are.
And we don't treat it like a calculator. We talk to it, confide in it, ask it what it thinks. So what's left aren't technical questions - they're the oldest ones: what we are, where we came from, what we're supposed to be.
What unfolds is part theology, part technical field guide, part genre chaos. Dirk Diggler and John Paul II illuminate the imago dei. A 1984 wrestling match says something about consciousness philosophy alone couldn't. Augustine shows up to talk about a chatbot, and stays. The author is a Christian and the book holds his position without apology but also with real joy and whimsy. It's not trying to settle the question or convince you of an answer. Only to show the strain the old truce is under, and what comes into view once we stop looking away from it.
