What makes a peacock shimmer-and what is he really doing when he rattles that magnificent fan?
Morning sunlight spills across a rain-washed garden. Shimmer, an Indian peacock, is ready to display-but his long train is muddy, his feathers won't fan properly, and another peacock has already claimed the best sunny stage. So Shimmer preens. He practices. He watches the light and waits for the breeze. Then, at last, he finds his place to shine.
Children can understand far more than we sometimes expect. I Am a Peacock: Shimmer, Rattle, Shine doesn't shrink nature science to fit an arbitrary idea of what young children are ready to know. Instead, it gives curious young minds real biology through story, rich language, and illustrations designed to make big ideas understandable-and fascinating.
As Shimmer prepares his display, young readers discover that his spectacular tail isn't really a tail at all, but a train of elongated upper tail coverts. They learn how a peacock fans and rattles these feathers during courtship, how peahens can detect tiny vibrations with their crests, and why light helps create the brilliant, shifting colors we see. They'll also discover where Indian peafowl live and why these ground-walking birds spend their nights high in trees.
Alongside Shimmer, a thoughtful child named Amara echoes his movements through imaginative play, turning patience, practice, observation, and growing confidence into a parallel story of finding your own moment to shine.
Part of the I Am a Wild Bird series, I Am a Peacock: Shimmer, Rattle, Shine blends lyrical storytelling with real-world science for children who are ready to wonder, question, and understand more than we often give them credit for. Back matter includes additional peafowl facts for young readers who want to keep exploring.
Look closely. Those beautiful feathers are doing far more than putting on a show.
Because your child's mind isn't common.
