Meet Will, an unusual yellow jacket wasp living in the Hemlock Forest. Instead of stealing honey, like most wasps, he steals hearts, forever changing the wasp's undesirable image. His story, How A Wasp Became a Bee, involves breaking free from the old roles that define us, and deals with the internal and external conflicts that keep us stuck in apathetic situations. In other words, Will has issues, and lots of them! He longs for a place he can call home. His brothers try to protect him by forcing him to wear stinger pants (suspender shorts with a fake stinger attached to the back), with the hope he will fit in.
To survive, Will must compensate for his (so-called) inadequacies by accepting a desperate existence... that is... until now. Follow Will on his journey through the garden in search of a new identity. Get acquainted with those living in the garden as they teach Will valuable lessons. Learn, as Will does, how important it is to follow your heart and face your fears. Watch Will transform, become empowered, and find joy and purpose in his life. Discover, as Will does, how often shortcomings are actually gifts in disguise.
Research indicates that the honeybee evolved from the wasp. This story is an interpretation of how that evolution occurred, told from a child's perspective. Although the story is fictional, all of the characterizations and details used to create it are charmingly based on facts. For example, Will's last name, Vespula, is the scientific name for wasp; Bella's last name, Mellifera, is the scientific name for the honeybee. Combining both fact and fiction allows this story to both teach and entertain its readers.
