I hesitate to call Homeland, Sam Jenks' phenomenal debut novel, a coming-of-age story, but if anything, it just goes to show how so many people have got that kind of book wrong in the past. Jenks gets it all right. Homoland is an iconoclastic and massively pleasurable read, delving into the life of a young gay man as he tries to throw himself into a world of love, lust, and art. Deep connections are made through experiences of cruising, and relationships and friendships of different types are dissected with a fine eye for emotional detail. Jenks renders the book with a powerfully compelling and endlessly readable prose style that exhibits a real skill for making you feel and relate to the rich characters that he has created. Sam Jenks (he/him) is a UK-based gay writer and arts producer known for his contemporary, genre-stretching fiction with a surreal twist. His short stories have appeared in Fruit Journal, Queerlings, and Litro, and will be featured in the upcoming dif zine anthology in summer 2025.
As the founder of dif, a network for queer writers, Sam is dedicated to amplifying voices working beyond the mainstream. He was also editor-in-chief for Queer Writing for a Brave New World and co-curated Audible UK's Pride List of Queer Storytelling in 2023. Sam is a peer at the Islington Mill Art Academy in Salford, UK.
