She had been lonely for the better part of 50 years.
Spinster librarian Lucinda Spence had been taught to distrust men but precocious and inquisitive nine-year-old Benton McGurley worked her way into Miss Spence's heart through their mutual love of books, bringing along Homer, Benton's dog and protector. This tender love story cleverly draws us into a love triangle between Miss Spence, Benton- who is abused by her drunkard father-and Homer. All their lives were transformed by this new bond.
