Home Was Next Door is a deeply emotional novel about childhood, memory, family, and the complicated truth that the people who love us can also be the people who fail us most.
At fifty-two, Nora Hale has built the kind of life she never had growing up: a steady marriage, three children who have always felt safe, and a peaceful home far from the tiny Michigan town where she learned far too young how to survive.
Then her stepsister calls.
Celia is dead.
The woman who raised Nora's younger stepsiblings with fierce devotion-and made Nora's own adolescence nearly unbearable-is gone after a short battle with cancer. Now Nora must return to Briar Glen for the funeral, help write a eulogy for a woman she cannot honestly praise, and empty the house next door that once belonged to her grandparents.
Because when Nora was a child, home was never the house where she slept.
Home was twenty-seven steps away.
It was Grandma Ruth's kitchen, where food appeared without questions. Grandpa Walter's porch light glowing across the yard. A locked door that stayed locked. A place where somebody noticed when the children were hungry and believed Nora when something was wrong.
Back in Briar Glen, Nora discovers a box of cassette tapes recorded by her mother, Claire, before cancer took her when Nora was only eight. The tapes were meant for the children she knew she would leave behind-but Nora's recording is missing.
Finding it begins to unravel forty years of family history.
As Nora searches for her mother's voice, memories return in pieces: four cereal bowls set out every morning, basement parties that sent three frightened children climbing through a bedroom window, the grandmother who quietly documented what no one else wanted to see, the teenage boy Nora pushed away before he could leave her first, and the young stepmother who could be loving to some children while cruel to another.
But memory is rarely simple.
Nora's brothers remember their childhood differently. Her stepsister remembers a mother who loved her completely. Her father insists that he loved all of his children, even as he is finally forced to acknowledge the choices he made when love required more than words.
And Nora must decide whether healing means forgiveness-or simply refusing to carry the same wounds into another generation.
Tender, sharp, sometimes funny, and deeply personal, Home Was Next Door is a story about complicated families, childhood trauma, grief, sibling memory, late understanding, and the quiet courage it takes to build something different from what you were given.
Because home is not always the house you came from.
Sometimes, home is the life you build after you leave.
