The London literary world of the 1950s, and some of its luminaries, are vividly brought to life, but they are incidental to what the book is really about, to the love story, which is both of the time and of all time, particular in its details but universal in the passions it describes, the joys, agonies, dilemmas and utter craziness of life-changing young love.
