The Heptaméron, written by Marguerite, Queen of Navarre, and translated by Benjamin Pifteau, is a collection of seventy short stories modeled after Boccaccio's Decameron. Set in the French countryside, ten travelers, five men and five women, seek refuge from a flood at an abbey. To pass the time, they agree to each tell a story each day for ten days. However, the storytelling is cut short on the eighth day. Each tale is followed by a lively discussion among the travelers, offering insights into the social mores, religious beliefs, and courtly love traditions of the 16th century. This work provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of the French Renaissance and offers a timeless exploration of human nature, love, and morality.
