For centuries, sexuality has been considered a taboo subject in many societies. It is almost never discussed at home. Parents often feel uncomfortable, avoid talking about it with their children - and sometimes even among themselves. Yet, like with any other topic, children ask questions. They turn to their parents, teachers, aunts, and uncles with curiosity about their sexuality. Too often, the answers they receive are vague or fanciful: A bird dropped you into Mommy's tummy... Or they are taught to refer to their private parts using silly nicknames, as if they were toys-simply because adults feel embarrassed to use the correct terms.
We often forget that the human being is fundamentally a sexual being. We then act surprised when a child shows interest in their body or genitals from a young age.
Sexuality has thus become a dark spot in education, left vulnerable to all sorts of influences: television, the internet, misinformed peers, malicious adults, or even well-meaning but uninformed parents, who inadvertently become the default teachers of sexuality.
This manual, Sex Education I: Hello Life, is the first in a series of books designed to accompany children from a very young age. It aims to help them identify, understand, and take ownership of their physical, psychological, and spiritual characteristics, within the framework of their family, social, and civic lives.
To talk to a child about their sexuality and their body is to allow them to feel safe in their physical reality, to help them fully experience their emotions, and to instill self-respect and respect for others.
Through its holistic approach, this manual seeks to be a tool for transformation-toward a more conscious, inclusive, and respectful education that supports each child's development and flourishing.
