Harder to Smile is a collection of Shane Latson's poetry, lyrics, and prose written over a period of time spanning some twenty years. A rather diverse collection, Shane includes works composed under very different circumstances-most composed under seriously difficult circumstances, namely, incarceration. The reader is introduced to the angst and poetry of a young man, and immersed within the literary moments that capture the dynamic interaction between time and this man-sometimes one moves at the expense of the other; and ultimately, the reader is privy to the maturation of that man-that man who eventually embraces authentic faith, earns his B.A., and now publishes this anthology, all while incarcerated. Along with poetry and lyrics, Shane includes a couple of essays written while pursuing his B.A. and a letter of thanks written after graduation. This anthology should be read in its entirety, contemplating each piece individually but also as an integrated whole.
