The Haft Paikar is a Persian epic poem written by Nizami of Ganja in the 12th century. The poem consists of seven stories, each of which is represented by a precious stone or metal. The stories revolve around the lives of seven princesses who are married to the same king. The princesses are each given a palace adorned with one of the precious stones or metals, hence the name Haft Paikar, which means seven portraits. The poem is known for its intricate descriptions of courtly life, including the lavish palaces, gardens, and clothing of the princesses. It also explores themes of love, loyalty, and betrayal, as the princesses navigate their relationships with each other and with the king. The Haft Paikar has been widely studied and celebrated in Persian literature. It is considered one of Nizami's greatest works and a masterpiece of the Persian epic tradition. The poem has been translated into many languages, including English, and continues to be read and appreciated by scholars and literature enthusiasts around the world.1924. This book contains Volume I (Translation) and Volume II (Commentary) of the original work. The Haft Paikar, or the Seven Beauties, contains the life and adventures of King Bahram Gur, and the seven stories told him by his seven queens. It is here translated from the Persian and a commentary is added. The text for the translation was prepared mainly from the manuscripts and lithographed texts of the India Office Library, both of which, by the liberality of the Indian Government, can be borrowed by the student for use at home. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
