On a March day over sixteen hundred years ago, in Alexandria, Egypt, a horde of fanatical Christian monks, instigated by Patriarch Cyril, assaulted, murdered, and literally tore to pieces a woman who went down in history as Hypatia of Alexandria: an esteemed philosopher and scientist, but above all, a great Initiate. Both the perpetrators and the instigators of this heinous crime went effectively unpunished, because for some time, both in Egypt and in the other provinces of the Roman Empire, the wind had changed, and a new religion coming from the East had been imposed as the only legitimate and recognized cult-in its embryonic form, yet in practice artfully constructed to satisfy a precise design of dominance and social control.
Hypatia had the destiny of living precisely in this terrible and ill-fated historical juncture. As the great Initiate she was, she was certainly capable of understanding the dramatic social drift she was witnessing, and she worked incessantly, through her actions and teachings, for the liberation of humanity from its chains. She represented a ray of light capable of piercing the darkness of obscurantism, dogmatism, and ignorance, and she taught her students Knowledge, Awareness, and respect for Tradition. For this reason, she struck great fear into the puppeteers of the system and had to be eliminated at all costs, silenced forever. But for the Christian Church, physically eliminating her was not enough. Indeed, her fame and notoriety in all cultured circles of the Empire were too vast for the memory of this extraordinary woman to be erased overnight, with a simple stroke of a pen. The Church thus had to resort to one of those mystifications in which it had always shone for skill and imagination, inventing a figure that embodied its main characteristics, albeit cleverly inverted and overturned in content. We are talking about the figure of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a character who never existed (by the Church's own admission!), fabricated at the drawing board to replace the figure of the great Philosopher and Initiate in the collective imagination of future generations.
