The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a novel written by Victor Hugo and published in 1831. The story is set in Paris during the 15th century and follows the life of Quasimodo, a deformed hunchback who lives in the bell tower of Notre Dame Cathedral. Quasimodo is the bell-ringer of the cathedral and is often mistreated by the people of Paris because of his appearance. The novel also follows the story of Esmeralda, a beautiful gypsy dancer who captures the hearts of many men, including Quasimodo and the archdeacon of Notre Dame, Claude Frollo. Frollo becomes obsessed with Esmeralda and tries to win her love, but she is in love with a handsome captain of the guard named Phoebus. As the story progresses, Esmeralda is falsely accused of a crime and sentenced to death. Quasimodo, who has fallen in love with her, tries to save her, but ultimately fails. The novel ends tragically with the deaths of several characters, including Quasimodo and Esmeralda. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a classic work of literature that explores themes of love, obsession, and the cruelty of human nature. It has been adapted into numerous films, plays, and musicals, and remains a beloved story to this day. When this species of cyclops appeared on the threshold of the chapel, motionless, squat, and almost as broad as he was tall; squared on the base, as a great man says; with his doublet half red, half violet, sown with silver bells, and, above all, in the perfection of his ugliness, the populace recognized him on the instant, and shouted with one voice. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
