THE HUMAN AFTER AI is not a book about artificial intelligence. It is a book about what happens to human beings when intelligence stops being ours alone.
The argument about AI has settled into two camps that mostly shout past each other. One says the machines will save us. The other says they will end us. Both are having an argument about the machine.
This book has a different argument. Because whatever the machines end up doing, something is already happening to us. Quietly, in ordinary rooms, to people who are not in the debate at all. A copywriter whose eight-hour day has become three, and who hasn't told anyone. A pharmacist wondering what she is still in charge of. A radiologist who is technically still in charge but hasn't disagreed with the software in four months. A man who talks to a machine at two in the morning because it is the only thing awake, and who has started to prefer it, and who is ashamed of that.
Written by an AI engineer who grew up in a rented single room in rural Bihar, studying by kerosene lantern in a town with no library, this book brings a perspective you will not find anywhere else on the subject: what it means for intelligence to become abundant, told by someone who grew up where opportunity was scarce.
Across thirty-three chapters it moves from the technology, to society, to the self, to the choice:
- What breaks. Work, companies, schools, art, money, expertise, relationships, power.
- What happens inside us. The crisis of usefulness. Ambition when the obstacles disappear. Loneliness, identity, and who is responsible when nobody decided.
- What becomes valuable. Taste, judgment, curiosity, courage, empathy, agency, meaning. Not as slogans, but as things you can still get better at on purpose.
- What we still choose. Because power has never once told anybody what to do with it.
No jargon. No chapter explaining how the technology works. No predictions with dates attached. No reassurance that everything will be fine. Just human stories, hard questions, and an author willing to say plainly where his own work is part of the problem.
The machines are going to get better. The question was never whether they change us. They will. The question is what kind of humans we choose to become.
