The book The Huguenots and Henry of Navarre V1 by Henry Martyn Baird is a detailed historical account of the Huguenots, a group of French Protestants, and their relationship with Henry of Navarre, who later became King Henry IV of France. The book is divided into two volumes, with the first volume covering the period from the beginning of the Reformation in France in the 16th century to the assassination of Henry III in 1589. The author provides a comprehensive overview of the Huguenot movement, including its origins, beliefs, and the political and social factors that contributed to its growth and persecution. Baird also explores the complex political landscape of 16th century France, including the Wars of Religion, the rise of the Catholic League, and the various factions that vied for power in the country. One of the main themes of the book is the role of Henry of Navarre, who was a prominent Huguenot leader and one of the key figures in the Wars of Religion. Baird examines Henry's early life, his conversion to Catholicism, and his eventual return to the Huguenot cause. The author also discusses Henry's military campaigns and his efforts to secure the Huguenots' rights and freedoms.Overall, The Huguenots and Henry of Navarre V1 is a scholarly and detailed account of a fascinating period in French history. It will be of interest to anyone interested in the Reformation, the Wars of Religion, or the history of France. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
