Hudibras is a satirical poem written by Samuel Butler in the 17th century. The book tells the story of Sir Hudibras, a Puritan knight who is portrayed as a pompous and hypocritical character. The poem is divided into three parts and is written in rhyming couplets. The first part of the poem follows Sir Hudibras as he sets out on a quest to find love. Along the way, he meets a variety of characters who are all satirized for their foolishness and hypocrisy. The second part of the poem focuses on Sir Hudibras' encounter with a group of witches, which leads to his downfall. The final part of the poem sees Sir Hudibras attempting to regain his reputation and status. Throughout the poem, Butler uses his wit and humor to poke fun at the religious and political climate of his time. Hudibras is considered a masterpiece of English literature and remains a popular work today.Ah me! what perils do environ The man that meddles with cold iron! What plaguy mischiefs and mishaps Do dog him still with after-claps! For though dame Fortune seem to smile And leer upon him for a while, She'll after shew him, in the nick Of all his glories, a dog-trick.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
