You have read that it burns. You have read three different sets of instructions that contradict each other. Somewhere in there you decided the whole thing was probably not for you.
The books on this shelf are beautiful, and most of them are written by people who already know what they are doing. They open with photography and history. They put safety in an appendix. Their recipes make two kilos of soap you are not sure you want yet.
This one is built the other way round.
- Safety first, and only once. The lye procedure is Chapter 1, before any recipe. You learn it once and the book refers back to it instead of repeating it.
- You make soap by page 30. One recipe, three oils, nothing to go wrong. Background comes after you have a loaf curing.
- Every recipe is one loaf, with a half batch printed beside it. About 1.1 kg, nine to ten bars. You never scale anything yourself.
- A real troubleshooting chapter. Arranged by what you can see, because that is what you have when a batch misbehaves. Seizing, volcano, false trace, soda ash, lye pockets, orange spots, soft bars. Each one with a plain verdict on whether the soap is still usable.
- You learn to build your own recipes. A full chapter on saponification values and lye calculators, worked by hand and then by calculator, so you are not locked to anyone else's ingredient list.
- You learn how to know it is safe. The zap test, pH strips, and a four step verification sequence from cutting to curing.
- Fifteen single loaf recipes, from a three oil starter bar to goat milk, stout, salt and clay bars
- The seven rules that prevent almost every failed first batch
- How to read trace, and how to spot the false version that ruins batches
- A saponification reference table and a worked recipe calculation
- Frozen liquid method for milk, beer, coffee and juice soaps
- Which colours survive saponification and which turn brown
- Which additives change the bar and which ones do nothing
- A ten batch progression and a batch log to copy
For the beginner who wants to actually make soap this month, and to understand what they made. No previous experience assumed. Equipment list is short and inexpensive.
