In February 1938, an ordinary suburban house in Thornton Heath, Croydon, became the centre of one of Britain's strangest and most disturbing poltergeist investigations.
Alma Fielding was a thirty-four-year-old housewife living with her husband, her son, and a lodger when the disturbances began. What started as illness and unease inside the home soon became something far harder to explain. Crockery smashed. Objects reportedly flew through rooms. Coal, eggs, jewellery, and household items appeared to behave as if moved by an unseen force. The private fear of one family quickly became a public sensation when newspaper reporters arrived at the door.
But the haunting of Alma Fielding was never a simple ghost story.
The case drew in Nandor Fodor, one of the most controversial psychical researchers of the twentieth century. Fodor did not treat the disturbance merely as proof of spirits or as an obvious fraud. Instead, he began to suspect that the violence inside the house might be connected to trauma, repression, and the unconscious mind. His investigation placed Alma at the centre of a fierce dispute between spiritualists, sceptics, journalists, and researchers who could not agree on what the case truly represented.
Was the Croydon Poltergeist a genuine haunting? Was it trickery? Was it a psychological eruption from a woman under unbearable pressure? Or was it something stranger, sitting uneasily between all available explanations?
A House Under Siege is a serious nonfiction account of the Alma Fielding case, exploring the reported phenomena, the newspaper sensation, Fodor's investigation, the accusations of fraud, the spiritualist backlash, and the darker human questions beneath the story. Set against the anxious atmosphere of Britain in 1938, with war looming over Europe, this is a haunting where the fear did not come from a ruined castle or ancient curse, but from the collapse of safety inside an ordinary home.
