On a sweltering night in the summer of 1967 in central Beijing, a mob of 200 Red Guards invaded Anthony Grey's house. They dragged the Reuters journalist outside, daubed him with black paint, hanged his cat in front of him while chanting Hang Grey! and flung him into a makeshift cell. He was held in total isolation in a tiny room plastered with Maoist slogans for more than two years during China's Cultural Revolution. Anthony Grey managed to keep a secret diary in shorthand and hid it from his guards throughout his incarceration. That diary was the starting point for this extraordinary account of his ordeal which has become a classic of its kind. The lonely fight against despair and isolation he describes brings vividly to life the harrowing plight that every hostage must face.
