The Horsemen continues the saga of the Baxter and Brubaker families through their children, mostly the sons.

The story reveals the agony and terror of war, the grief and sorrow of the loss of loved ones, and the choices the men made to achieve their ambitions.

Two Baxter sons attend West Point and become Army officers. The third goes to seminary and becomes a minister and later, an Army chaplain. The lone Brubaker son joins the Texas Rangers.

All three Baxter brothers serve in the Spanish-American and American-Philippine Wars. All three are members of the American Expeditionary Forces in WWI. All three end up at the same Army post during the Mexican-American border conflict.

While the Baxters are off defending the country, the lone Brubaker is fighting other battles in Texas as a Texas Ranger.
