Looking at the map one day, I discovered a town named Durant in Mississippi, which I never knew about. Which prompted me to research it's history, I learned Louis Durant came down from Canada, married a Chocktaw Indian Chief's daughter, fought with the tribe in New Orleans, negotiated treaties with the U.S. Government in behalf of Indians, that Durant Mississippi was named out of respect for the man. Also learned that according to the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, if Indians owned land, they never had to go to Oklahoma. However, Louis Durant and family were treated so badly by whites they were forced to sell 7000 acres of land, move to Oklahoma.
