Hope for The Best...Expect the Worst begins in tumultuous 1985, when Ken begins his civil service career and details his many mishaps, including dating, working, and ultimately getting engaged and married.

Ken's life takes many twists and turns, culminating in his diagnosis of late stage kidney disease, which intensifies and draws to a close the whole story of Ken being alone, unsupported and feeling like he never mattered.
