Preached at Hippo in the paschal season, traditionally dated to the year 407, these ten discourses take up the First Epistle of John phrase by phrase. Its single theme is love - the love of God and the love of the brethren - and Augustine follows it into every corner of the Christian life: the marks of true charity, the fear that love casts out, the difference between the love of the world and the love of the Father, and the sign by which the children of God are known from the children of the devil. It is in the seventh of these homilies that he speaks the words for which they are best remembered, Dilige, et quod vis fac - Love, and do what you will - not as a license for the will, but as the promise that a heart rooted in love can bring forth nothing but good.
