A History of the Red Sea traces this remarkable story from the sea's geological birth and its earliest inhabitants through the voyages of the pharaohs to the mysterious Land of Punt. It follows the rise of Aksum, the flourishing trade between Rome and India, and the transformation of the Red Sea after the emergence of Islam, when merchants and pilgrims turned ports such as Jeddah into vital crossroads connecting Africa, Arabia, Asia, and the Mediterranean.
The struggle for those lucrative routes brought new powers into the region. Fatimids, Ayyubids, Mamluks, Portuguese explorers, and Ottoman sultans all fought to control the commerce that flowed through the sea. European ambitions intensified in the nineteenth century, culminating in the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869-an engineering achievement that transformed the Red Sea into one of the most important arteries of global trade and placed it at the center of imperial competition.
The twentieth century brought world wars, decolonization, Arab-Israeli conflict, the Suez Crisis, Cold War rivalry, and the transformative wealth of the oil boom. In the modern era, the strategic importance of the Bab-el-Mandeb and Suez chokepoints has drawn regional and global powers alike, while piracy, war in Yemen, attacks on commercial shipping, and competing military bases have demonstrated how events along these shores can reverberate throughout the world economy.
