Should any of the readers of these pages desire to know more of these two young disciples of Jesus Christ, they will find a brief notice of Arthur Spencer, entitled 'Early Zeal', in the Church Missionary Juvenile Instructor, for 1849; and of John Lang Bickersteth, an interesting memoir has been published by the Religious Tract Society, with a preface by his grandfather, the present Rector of Sapcote. In the year 1788, on September 1st, a stone coffin was discovered on the north side of the chancel, while a grave was being made; the lid being a little displaced, a human skeleton appeared, about 5ft. 5in. in length. The spectators did not put a single bone out of its place, but carefully secured the lid as at first. There was no inscription or date upon the cofiin, which was not removed, but traces could be seen of some devices cut in the stone. The inhabitants said, that, it contained the remains of some officer buried there in the time of the civil wars, as the soldiers were then encamped on both sides of the village; but more probably the remains were those of one of the Bassets, or of some one buried during the Barons' wars, which happened in the time of Ralph Basset, who was summoned to parliament as a Baron, 49 Hen.
