Breland is the Norwegian word for Glacier-Land. Norsemen and others who became raiding seafarers and pirates were known as Vikings. The Vikings raided and pillaged rivers, coastal villages, and towns for approximately two hundred years, beginning around 1000 AD.

The first Breland was likely from the land of glaciers, a place near modern-day Breland, Norway, where Brelands can still be found. The earliest documented ancestor of the American Breland Clan, the subject of this book, was Samuel Breland, born around 1500 AD in Eisleben, Prussia. His great-great-grandson, Hans Georg Breland, along with his three sons, Abraham, Jacob, and James, arrived at the port of Philadelphia in 1752 aboard the Queen of Denmark. Possibly every Breland in America descended from Hans.
