History of the Apprentices' Library of Philadelphia 1820-1920 chronicles the fascinating development of the oldest free circulating library in the United States. This comprehensive historical account by John Frederick Lewis traces the institution's origins from its founding in 1820 through its centennial in 1920. Established during a period of rapid industrial growth and social reform, the library served as a vital educational resource for young laborers and the broader Philadelphia community.
The work explores the philanthropic vision behind the library's creation, the evolution of its collections, and its enduring role in the intellectual life of the city. Detailed narratives follow the library's changing locations, its governance, and its significant impact on public literacy prior to the establishment of the modern municipal library system. Lewis provides a meticulously researched perspective on the social and educational landscape of Pennsylvania, making this an essential resource for those interested in the history of Philadelphia, the evolution of American library science, and the broader social history of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
