A History of the Anabaptists in Switzerland
Uncover the thrilling, heavily persecuted birth of the Radical Reformation and the brave believers who chose the martyr's stake over state-church control.
While standard histories of the Reformation focus almost entirely on Martin Luther and Huldrych Zwingli, a deeper, far more dangerous spiritual revolution was brewing in the shadow of the Swiss Alps. A courageous group of believers demanded a total return to the primitive New Testament standard-refusing to allow the state to govern the conscience.
They were mockingly labeled Anabaptists (re-baptizers) for practicing believer's baptism. For this, they were hunted, imprisoned, drowned, and burned at the stake by both Roman Catholics and their fellow Protestants.
In this brilliantly researched classic, Dr. Henry S. Burrage rescues the Swiss Anabaptists from centuries of historical slander. Drawing directly from 16th-century court records, original letters, and eye-witness accounts, Burrage presents a concise, deeply moving chronicle of these forgotten heroes of the faith.
Why This Historical Classic Belongs in Your Library:The Epicenter of the Radical Reformation: Trace the movement right to its birthplace in Zurich, exploring the dramatic spiritual split between Zwingli and his closest disciples.
Flawless Primary Research: Free from historical bias, Burrage packs his narrative with direct quotes from the earliest disputations, confessions, and prison letters.
The Lineage of Soul Liberty: Discover the costly theological foundations of religious freedom, local church autonomy, and separation of church and state that directly shaped modern faith.
Stories of Christian Martyrdom: Stand alongside legendary leaders like Conrad Grebel, Felix Manz, and Balthasar Hubmaier as they faced execution with songs of praise on their lips.
Though they were apparently defeated, the story of their unyielding faith remains a spectacular testimony to the power of truth over tyranny.
Whether you are a student of church history, a pastor looking for rich illustrations of Christian endurance, or a believer wanting to understand the deep roots of religious liberty, Dr. Henry S. Burrage's masterful account is an absolute necessity.
