William Richard Morfill (1834 - 1909) wrote grammars of Russian, Polish, Czech, Serbian, and Bulgarian, became Oxford's first Reader in Russian in 1889 and its first Professor of Russian and the other Slavonic languages in 1900, and was elected to the British Academy in 1903. A History of Russia came from Methuen in 1902, and it reads like the work of a philologist who turned to history: careful with sources, unhurried over each reign, and as interested in the church and the countryside as in courts and campaigns.
He opens with Peter's early years and the making of a modern state, then follows Anne, Elizabeth, Catherine the Second, Paul, Alexander I, and Nicholas I through struggles with Sweden, Poland, Napoleon, and the sultan, and ends with the freeing of the serfs and the killing of Alexander II in 1881. A closing summary brings matters to 1899, and a last chapter traces the spread of Russian rule eastward. The twelve maps and plans lay out those frontiers and battles as Morfill's own readers first met them.
