It is hardly worth while to speak of the trial that was made of M. Lucien Bonaparte in the same position. His independence of mind and character of which he was to give so many proofs in the future, made him altogether unfit for taking from and carrying out the orders of a brother, whom he could not resign himself to see in a position so superior to his own. The disagreements between the Emperor and his family, the difficulties which arose from these disagreements, and the obstacles which they threw in the way of the establishment and the keeping up of his power, constitute an important portion of his history.
