The story takes a dramatic turn in 711 AD with the arrival of Tariq ibn Ziyad, the Berber general whose name would forever be etched onto the landscape as Jabal Tariq, or Gibraltar. For centuries, the Rock served as a formidable Moorish fortress, a key bridgehead between North Africa and al-Andalus, before becoming a coveted prize in the long Christian Reconquest of Spain. The narrative delves into the fierce sieges and contests that defined its medieval history, culminating in its capture by Castile and its establishment as the Key of Spain, a status symbolized by its iconic coat of arms featuring a castle and a golden key.
In 1704, during the War of the Spanish Succession, an Anglo-Dutch fleet seized the Rock, and its fate was sealed in 1713 by the Treaty of Utrecht, which ceded it to Great Britain for ever. This volume vividly recounts Gibraltar's transformation into a bastion of British sea power, detailing the engineering marvels that turned the limestone mountain into an almost impregnable fortress.
