Francis Springer, elected president January 20. Thomas J. Saunders, elected secretary January 20. The Constitution adopted by this convention was sanctioned by the people at an election held on the 3d day of August, 1857, there being 40,311 votes cast For the Constitution, and 38,681 votes cast Against the Constitution, and took effect by proclamation of the governor September 3, 1857.
