His Excellency is a novel written by French author Emile Zola, originally published in 1897. The story takes place in the fictional African country of Pahouin, which is under French colonial rule. The main character, Jean-Francois Jansoulet, is a young man of humble origins who rises to become a wealthy and powerful figure in the colonial administration. He is appointed as the governor of Pahouin, but his ambitions and greed lead him down a path of corruption and scandal.Jansoulet's rise to power is fueled by his association with the wealthy and influential Count de Montpavon, who uses his connections to advance Jansoulet's career. However, Jansoulet's downfall comes when he becomes embroiled in a scandal involving a forged will and the Count's daughter, Pauline. Jansoulet is ultimately exposed and forced to flee the country, leaving behind his wealth and power. The novel explores themes of power, corruption, and colonialism, as well as the tensions between French and African cultures. Zola's vivid descriptions and insightful commentary on the colonial system make His Excellency a thought-provoking and engaging read. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
