On Monday, April 13, 2027, the ultimate plan goes live. Caretaker Mr. Halász installs pre-recorded empty footage on Marcus Wenckheim's corporate security feed, giving Lola's squad a flawless four-hour blind spot. While Tommie, Rae, and Bea create a visual diversion by sketching the fountain, Lola slips her hand behind the cold stone planter, extracts the rusted iron pin, and retrieves the 146-year-old key to Room 17. With Headmistress Halloway acting as a silent lookout in the hall, Lola turns the lock with a clean click, and the sealed room swings inward for the first time since 1893.
Inside, the air smells of old paper and ancient dried lavender. Lola locates the exact book from a 1972 reference photo: a dark-green leather volume embossed with a gold letter 'R' containing the handwritten minutes of the Reading Circle. Suddenly, heavy, uneven footsteps echo down the hall-Mr. Kasztner has arrived unexpectedly. Acting with ice-cold precision, Bea grabs the door from the inside and clicks the latch shut, locking the squad inside the dark room while Mrs. Halloway handles the lawyer in the corridor. Once the coast is clear, they escape down the back stairwell, and Vera Lindsay deposits the minutes at the National Archive under a fake title page.
Furious at finding an empty room on Friday, Marcus Wenckheim retaliates by immediately withdrawing Bea from Ivybridge and transferring her to the strict Pongrátz Academy. But Tommie holds the line in the group chat, declaring, this is, the start of the four of us at long distance. Across the spring and summer, the girls maintain their bond through weekly Saturday meetings at the Café Egér, logging their connection on a support grid designed by Rae. Life moves forward: Lola happily serves as a bridesmaid at her father's summer wedding to Claire, watching her mother and Gabriel attend as supportive guests.
In September, seventh grade begins. But in late October, the operational pause cracks open. A contact at the Archive reveals that a Vienna-based law firm representing Marcus's German buyer has filed a formal request to seize Vera Lindsay's deposit logs. The war is back on. Mrs. Halloway calls Lola, offering a critical assignment hidden inside their upcoming winter ski trip to Mátraháza in January 2028. Lola sits in her bedroom, feeling the key resting against her chest like a small additional bone, completely ready for the winter ahead.
