Hero and Leander: A Poem is a tragic love story written by Christopher Marlow in 1821. The poem is based on the Greek mythological tale of two lovers, Hero and Leander, who lived in the city of Sestos, on opposite sides of the Hellespont. The poem is divided into two parts, each containing three sestiads (a six-line stanza). In the first part, Marlow describes the beauty of Hero and her devotion to the goddess Venus. Leander, who lives across the Hellespont, falls in love with Hero and swims across the treacherous waters to be with her. They spend the night together, but Leander must return to his side of the Hellespont before dawn. In the second part, Marlow describes how Leander, unable to resist his love for Hero, swims across the Hellespont again and again to be with her. However, one night a storm arises, and Leander drowns in the rough waters. Hero, devastated by the loss of her love, throws herself from a tower into the sea to be with him. The poem is considered one of Marlow's greatest works and is known for its beautiful language and vivid imagery. It explores themes of love, devotion, and the power of nature.
