Herland is a utopian novel written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, first published in 1915. The story is set in an isolated society composed entirely of women, who reproduce via parthenogenesis (asexual reproduction). The women are highly intelligent and skilled, living in a society free of war, conflict, and poverty. The main characters, three male explorers, discover this society and are initially skeptical of its existence. However, they soon come to appreciate the peaceful and harmonious way of life in Herland, and begin to question their own patriarchal society. The novel explores themes of gender roles, feminism, and the possibility of a utopian society.
