Life was simple enough. All Johnny had to concern himself with was the humdrum nature of his rather quotidian and lackluster existence. Then, all of a sudden, everything changed in the blink of an eye. One late-summer day, extraterrestrial life presented itself to the world in confounding and shock-inducing fashion. Nothing would ever be simple again. Where once the tranquil pastel blues of the August Ontarian sky sat vacantly above, marred only by the off-white of broken cloud cover, now, the skies were awash with unnatural colours. All around the world, spheres of indeterminate nature and origin began to appear high in the skies above. Vexing to the human eye, the spheres were barely comprehensible, defying logic. Soon, the spheres take over the airwaves, emitting brief messages of peaceful and cooperative intent. They come to be known as the Heralds of Change to the public, and as the Visitors to their servants and supporters. Society is thrown into turmoil as the Heralds of Change reveal something called Optimization - an agenda that purports to be designed to benevolently remake society with the intent to improve the human condition. Johnny finds the purpose he has long sought in this seemingly noble cause. However, not everyone sees Optimization as benevolent, or even tolerable. As Johnny discovers more about the Heralds of Change, it becomes clear that things aren't quite as they first appeared. Will Johnny see the truth in time? Will he choose the illusory comfort proffered by surrendering to the Optimization process, or will he instead choose dangerous freedom?
