Martha Yoder moves to Hollybrook to help her sister Sarah with her three young sons. Sarah is alone now since her husband's efforts at farming failed, and he went north to work at the factories. At Sarah's home, Martha's days are filled with housework, helping to care for her nephews, and tending the animals. She even goes so far as to take a job in town. Alan Lapp tries to manage the family farm, his father's worsening health, and his older brother's absurd demands. His shunned brother Will is relentless in his pursuit of the family land, and Alan must find a way to stop him. Alan finds comfort and solace in his budding friendship with Martha. When Martha is forced to leave town, he is bereft. Is the only good thing that's happened to him in a long while now leaving his life? And how can he possibly turn things around and ensure Martha stays in Hollybrook?
