Bobby Mackey's Music World sits on the banks of the Ohio River in Wilder, Kentucky. On the surface, it's a honky-tonk bar - neon signs, a dance floor, a stage. But beneath that floor is a sealed well. And in 1896, a headless woman was found nearby. Her name was Pearl Bryan. Her head was never recovered. The men who killed her were hanged - and with their last breaths, they cursed the place and swore they'd return.
That was just the beginning.
What followed across the next century reads like something no one would believe if it hadn't been documented, recorded, and argued before a judge in a court of law. A caretaker named Carl Lawson moved into the building and began to change. He heard voices. He saw things. He performed rituals he couldn't explain. He was eventually subjected to a full exorcism - on camera - in front of witnesses.
And then he sued.
A man took his employer to court claiming demonic possession. The case went forward. It was real. The documents exist.
Hellgate is not a ghost story. It is not folklore. It is the documented history of a place that has defied explanation for over a hundred years - told with the rigor of a legal brief and the tension of a thriller. Author Jeromy Baumbach drove to Wilder, Kentucky on a Tuesday. He walked through the front door. He sat in the rooms where these things happened.
He came back changed.
